John George Edward Brown, 85, of Groton City, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on August 4th at Fairview Nursing Home. He was fondly known by his family and friends as “Blip.” He was resourceful, strong willed, creative, and self-reliant man. George was born in the family homestead in Groton, Connecticut on June 1, 1927, the youngest son of Clarence Brown and Beatrice Schuyler. He graduated from Robert E. Fitch High School, class of 1947.
George served in the United States Navel Reserves from Jan 19, 1945 to July 25, 1946 as a Seaman First Class V6 USNR. During his service he trained as a motor mechanic and received the American Theatre Medal and Victory Medal. He also received commendations for Honorable Discharge after his service.
He then spent his career at Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics, where he started as a welder and retired after 42 years in 1986 as a ship supervisor. He received his associate’s degree in Business Management from the University of New Haven during his employment at Electric Boat. He remains respected and admired by his peers and coworkers.
George was well-known throughout the community as a fun loving guy who enjoyed playing pranks, organizing block parties, and telling his family stories. His favorite hobby was collecting train memorabilia, watching boats on the river, reading national geographic magazines, and doing word searches. He was a passionate man who loved to spend time with his family. Long summer days at the beach with family were precious and he loved to host family cookouts at the family homestead where his famous rack of ribs were enjoyed by all.
George was predeceased by his brother James Brown of Columbus, Ohio, sister Harriet Duarte of Groton, Connecticut, sister June Perry of Groton, Connecticut, and daughter Loys Brown of Quaker Hill, Connecticut.
George is survived by his daughter Ida Brown-Kleiner and granddaughter Briana Kleiner of Groton, Connecticut. Son Cameron Brown and daughter- in -law Darlene Brown, grandchildren Brandon, Andre, Nikki, and Shannon of Kissimee, Florida, and grandson Tracy Brown of Manhattan , NY. Son George Brown Jr of Winter Park, Florida, and a list of nieces and nephews.
Throughout George’s life he remained a true friend and mentor who listened closely and he was always up for a good prank. He was a smart, hard working guy with a great big heart. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all.
The funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, August 9th at Byles- Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames Street, Groton, CT.
Calling hours with the family will be Thursday morning from 10am-11am, prior to the service. Internment will be at Colonel Ledyard Cemetery, Groton. Repass will be at Groton Heights Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, please make your donations to a charity of your choice.
