Born: July 04, 1920
Died: July 20, 2012
FLORINE G. (BOSLET) CARROLL, 92, passed away peacefully at Apple Rehab on Friday, July 20, 2012.
She was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1920 the youngest of 11 children to Cyrillus Romanus and Florence Fonner Boslet. She married Richard (Dick) Carroll on May 30, 1941. Groton, Connecticut became her hometown in the early 1950’s when Dick was transferred to the Groton Naval Base, deeply rooting there once he opened his own electrical contracting business. She is still fondly remembered by her Altoona family, her surviving nieces and nephews and her very best friend and school day chum, Peg McCreary, and she was always happy for news from “the gang from back home.”
Florine deeply loved her children and was proud of their each and every accomplishment. She is survived by these five children: David and his wife Laurette of Warner, NH; John, formerly of Brooklyn, NY and now of Burlington, VT; Joan and her husband Dale (Beauchemin) of Burlington, VT; Andrew and his wife Joan (Bellenoit), of North Stonington, CT; and Jennifer and her true companion, William Miller of Gales Ferry,CT. She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Dana Ann, in July 1960. Florine treasured her five grandchildren and was able to enjoy special moments with her great grandchildren, as well.
Florine’s birthday being the 4th of July hardly seems a coincidence to those who had the pleasure and the privilege of knowing her. Ever the fire cracker, Florine lived her life with strong will and courageous determination. Known to her closest friends as ‘Rene”, she will be remembered for her quick wit and the love of a good, hearty laugh. Even though the insidious disease of dementia slowly eroded her memory and vast vocabulary, it did not touch her tenacity and sense of humor.
Throughout her life, Florine found pleasure in life’s simple joys- reading voraciously, flowers and sunny breezes, art, history, music, and making things “just so.” She loved to entertain and was a great cook, her special dishes savored by many. Recipes, such as her signature potato salad, were duplicated over time- but they never quite tasted the same without Rene’s touch.
Florine was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Church in Groton, where she joined her dear friends at Mothers’ Circle, the Rosary Society, and the Discussion Club. In later years, she joined the parish of St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer, also in Groton.
Apple Rehab of Mystic,(always Mary Elizabeth Nursing Center to us) has been Florine’s home for the past four and a half years- and the staff instantly became family. Florine’s immediate family sincerely expresses their unending gratitude for these fine people who unfailingly showered her with their love, compassion, hugs, kisses, and laughs.
