Karen Nagel of Gales Ferry Connecticut died on Saturday, April 21, 2012.
Karen Forssmark Nagel was born in Cleveland Ohio on July 18, 1946; daughter of Stig and Irene Forssmark. She attended Allegheny College and graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1968. While at Allegheny she met her husband Art Nagel, and they were married on August 17, 1968. Daughter Jennifer was born April 18, 1970 and son Joe was born November 22, 1973.
Karen and Art moved to Connecticut in September 1972. Karen volunteered at the Gales Ferry library, and worked at Gales Ferry Tax Service from 1983-1986. She was one of the first volunteers for the Women’s Center of Southeastern Connecticut.
Karen graduated with a Master of Science degree in accounting from New Haven University in January 1988. She worked for Sonalysts in Waterford from 1988 to 1989, and then was employed as an accountant at Doherty Beals and Banks in New London. Karen became a Certified Public Accountant in September of 1992. She retired from Doherty Beals and Banks in 2000. While at Doherty Beals and Banks, she served as treasurer of New London Landmarks.
After retirement, Karen served as treasurer on the Board of Directors for Martin House and Thames River Community Services (Norwich) from 2000-2010 and as treasurer on the Board of Directors of Child and Family Agency (New London) from 2000-2009. She was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Child and Family Agency from 2009-2010. Karen was awarded the 2011 Child and Family volunteer of the year award. She volunteered as a cook at A Movable Feast from 2002-2007. Karen was also the Groton and Gales Ferry sight coordinator for the AARP tax service from 2005-2010 where she and her co-workers provided free income tax preparation for the elderly. Karen also volunteered at the BP Learned mission (New London) every Thursday afternoon to help children with their homework. Karen regularly attended both Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the United Methodist Church of Gales Ferry. Karen was a devoted mother and grandmother; always having time for her family. She particularly enjoyed Thursday mornings with her young grandchildren Eric and Nathan.
Karen is survived by husband Art, daughter Jennifer McCracken and her husband Curtis, grandson Eric and grandson Nathan (Gales Ferry, Connecticut), son Joe and wife Lauren, newborn grandson Thomas, and newborn granddaughter Emily (Waltham, Massachusetts), as well as her sister Cindy Dettman (Leesville, Florida).
Karen will always be remembered as a very humble, intelligent, gentle, caring person who was always willing to help others in need. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved her family very much.
There will be a Celebration of Karen’s life held at the United Methodist Church in Gales Ferry, 6 Chapman Lane on Friday April 27 at 11:00 AM.
